About
The work of Placid, an artist duo of sculptor and painter, starts in 2019 with the creation of imaginary personalities. Psyches of rich sensibilities who are yet perceived as placid beings in the eyes of an observer. With years of experience as architects in Hong Kong before they start making art, the artist duo portray characters through formal operations, and the line is thin between them being a living person and a sculptural object. Iconic shapes and sharp edges blend subtly into soft undulations, and boundaries are ambiguous, just enough to suggest features to leave an impression. Contemplating on topics of peace, distance, plasticity and understanding, they explore using fluid formal expressions.
Paintings by Placid are done through unusual lenses, accentuating the changes in perception created by shifts in viewpoint or optical distortions. Despite their dynamic nature, they convey an atmosphere of peaceful equilibrium.
